How to choose the right wedding photographer (it’s not just about the photos)

Choosing the right wedding photographer is about more than just beautiful photos. Discover why connection, communication, and experience matter just as much for capturing your day perfectly.

Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most personal and impactful decisions you’ll make for your day. After all, these are the photos you’ll look back on for years to come. But while it might be tempting to book someone based solely on their portfolio, there’s so much more that goes into finding the right fit.

Here’s what I recommend keeping in mind when choosing your wedding photographer—because it’s not just about the photos.

1. Personality and connection matter

Your photographer will be with you for most of your wedding day, sometimes even more than your partner! Feeling comfortable around them is key. During your initial consultation, ask yourself: do they make you feel relaxed and at ease? Can you picture them blending in with your friends and family? That personal connection often translates to more natural, candid photos.

2. Experience makes all the difference

Wedding days are unpredictable. An experienced photographer knows how to handle tricky lighting, tight timelines, and last-minute changes with ease. They’ll also be able to anticipate moments before they happen, capturing those emotional, fleeting seconds that can’t be recreated.

3. Style and editing consistency

Every photographer has a signature style, from light and airy to dark and moody. Look through their galleries to ensure their editing is consistent. A well-rounded portfolio should include a mix of portraits, candid moments, and details. Pay attention to how they handle different lighting scenarios too—you’ll want someone who can adapt to whatever your day brings.

4. Communication and professionalism

A great photographer is more than just a camera expert; they’re also a skilled communicator. From your first inquiry to the final delivery of your photos, notice how responsive and clear they are. Do they ask thoughtful questions about your wedding vision? Do they provide helpful resources or timeline suggestions? That level of care can make all the difference.

5. Testimonials and reviews are telling

Past clients’ experiences can give you so much insight. Read through reviews to see what couples loved most about working with the photographer. Were they helpful and calm on the wedding day? Did they capture moments the couple didn’t even realize were happening? Positive reviews are a good sign you’re in excellent hands.

6. Understand what’s included

Photographers offer a variety of packages, and it’s important to know what’s included. How many hours of coverage will you have? Is an engagement session included? Make sure everyone is on the same page from the start so there are no surprises later.

7. Trust your gut

At the end of the day, the right photographer will feel like the right fit. If their work resonates with you, their approach aligns with your vision, and you genuinely enjoy chatting with them, that’s a great sign.

Looking for someone who captures the real, unscripted moments of your day? I’d love to hear your story and see if we’re the right fit!
