Get wedding photos you actually love with these 9 unexpected tips. From choosing the perfect getting-ready space to embracing candid moments, here's how to help ensure your wedding gallery is as stunning as possible.

You’ve probably heard all the classic advice for great wedding photos—face the light, relax, and don’t forget to smile. But after years of photographing weddings, I’ve picked up a few unexpected tips that can make all the difference. If you want to feel amazing in your photos and get a gallery that genuinely captures your day, these are for you.

1. Get ready in a space you love

The getting-ready space sets the tone for your morning photos. Natural light is always a win, but a space that feels beautiful and intentional makes an even bigger impact. Think about neutral tones, clean backgrounds, and personal touches (that aren’t tacky).

2. Have a ‘soft’ timeline

A strict schedule can feel stressful, and that stress shows in your photos. Plan some buffer time between moments so you can breathe, enjoy yourself, and embrace those in-between candid moments.

3. Choose a ceremony spot with flattering light

If your venue offers flexibility, consider how the light will look during the exact time of your ceremony. Shade or filtered light (like under trees, if it’s not too dappled) is often more flattering than harsh midday sun.

4. Let your veil do the work

Long veils add movement and drama to your portraits. Even if you’re not wearing one all day, consider popping it on for a few artistic shots.

5. Don’t overthink posing

The best photos often happen when you’re just being yourself. Focus on your partner, move naturally, and don’t be afraid to laugh. Trust your photographer to guide you during portraits so you don’t end up with stiff, awkward shots.

6. Forget the perfect shot

Some of the most memorable photos aren’t the ones where everything looks pristine. Windblown hair, tearful laughter, or a chaotic dance floor moment? Those are gold.

7. Have an unplugged ceremony

Nothing ruins a heartfelt moment like a sea of phones in the aisle. Ask guests to stay present and leave the photo-taking to your photographer. You’ll be glad you did.

8. Trust your photographer’s perspective

Sometimes we might ask you to stand in unexpected spots or move in ways that feel a little funny. But that creative angle or unexpected light? It often results in the most striking shots.

9. Be fully present

It sounds simple, but it’s the most important tip. Let go of worrying about how you look, what the weather’s doing, or if everything is running perfectly on time. When you’re fully immersed in your day, your photos will reflect that.
