Top posing tips from a documentary wedding photographer
Discover how to create authentic, natural photos with these top posing tips from a documentary wedding photographer. Perfect for couples looking to capture their love story in a natural, organic way.
When it comes to photography, the magic lies in capturing those raw, unscripted moments—the ones where you’re simply being yourselves. Forget stiff poses or forced smiles; the best photos happen when you’re connected, relaxed, and having fun. These posing tips are designed to help you feel natural in front of the camera while creating images that tell your love story authentically.
1. Focus on connection, not perfection
The best photos come from genuine connection. I often start sessions by saying, “Don’t look at me unless it feels really natural (the perfect ‘eye contact’ moment) or I prompt you to do so!” This keeps the focus on each other, not the camera.
Some of my favourite ways to prompt connection include:
• Whispering secrets to each other.
• Kisses all over the face.
• Holding hands while walking, running, dancing, or spinning together.
• Tapping into your inner child with playful and silly moments (think: walking while bumping into each other, splashing each other in the lake, tickling one another, etc.)
These interactions bring out genuine emotions and create the perfect foundation for storytelling imagery.
2. Start with simple movement
Movement is key to shaking off any nerves. I always start sessions with an easy prompt that involves gentle motion, like walking together. This helps you get into the feel of the session and focus on connecting with your partner.
Small actions like walking, snuggling, or holding hands make for natural moments that flow beautifully. They also allow me to capture candid shots that feel effortless and true to who you are as a couple.
3. Use your story as inspiration
Every couple has a unique story, and I love weaving that into the session. I’ll ask you questions ahead of time and during our session to get a sense of who you are and what you love. For instance, if hiking is a big part of your relationship, we might meet on a favourite trail. If you and your partner have always done something cute and quirky, like hooking pinkies when you walk, you should work that into your session, too! Capturing you doing something that make you you always feels the most natural.
Your story can also guide how you pose! For example, a couple who makes classy date nights a regular part of their relationship might feel more natural huddling and whispering over glasses of wine than being photographed in adventurous, outdoorsy poses.
4. Lean into gentle guidance but don’t be afraid to move freely
When I host a session, I offer prompts to get started, like “Walk towards me and then look at each other,” but the real magic happens in the in-between moments. For instance, if I guide you to sit on a stump and kiss, the shot of him helping you up off the stump might end up being the most adorable and natural of all.
These little unscripted interactions often result in the most heartfelt images, so try not to stop smiling and having fun even when you’re not actively “posing”!
5. The power of close-ups
Close-ups of hands, embraces, and subtle gestures add so much depth to your gallery. Sometimes I’ll let you know when I’m moving in close, but other times I don’t—the element of surprise keeps your faces relaxed and genuine.
No matter how near or far your photographer is to you, try to keep your posture relaxed and smile softly to ensure a tender, natural look in all your final images.
6. Lean into imperfections
A crooked tie or wind-blown hair might seem like flaws, but they add so much authenticity to your photos. It’s easy to worry about these little details, but I promise you they look amazing in the final images. These raw, real moments are what make your photos truly artistic and unforgettable.
7. Camera shy? Utilize some relaxation techniques!
If you feel camera-shy, don’t worry—it’s totally normal. I always encourage couples to take deep breaths and keep moving during the session. People tend to tense up in still poses, so staying active helps create natural moments.
But remember, nerves can actually lead to some of the sweetest, most emotional shots. Just focus on each other, and let the love between you take a front seat, not the poses.
8. Blend the posed and candid
The perfect gallery balances traditional portraits with documentary-style shots. I love using candid prompts, like asking you to make each other laugh, to create moments that feel both spontaneous and polished. These shots often transition seamlessly into more posed moments without feeling forced.
9. Use the surroundings
Your environment is a big part of the story. Whether it’s leaning against a tree, walking along a beach, or using architectural elements, I love incorporating the setting into your photos.
I also play with light, shadows, and natural framing to add a creative touch. These elements make your gallery feel rich and layered, and take a lot of the pressure off what you’re doing with your bodies! It’s really not about the poses, it’s about how you’re interacting in your environment – so don’t stress!
10. Think of your session as a cute date!
This is the key to creating relaxed, joyful photos! Rather than thinking of your session as a series of poses, imagine it as a fun, laid-back date night where your photographer happens to be tagging along as the third wheel. When you’re comfortable and enjoying time with your partner, it shows in your photos.
Your photographer is there to guide and prompt you, but your love and connection will naturally shine through when you’re focused on each other and having fun. Let the session be playful and easy, and trust that every genuine moment will be captured beautifully.
The art of not posing
At the heart of great photos is connection, trust, and the ability to just be yourselves. By leaning into natural movements and embracing the unposed moments, your photos will capture the essence of your love story.
