Key questions to ask a wedding photographer before hiring them to ensure your big day is beautifully captured—from experience and style to pricing and flexibility.

Hiring the right wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your big day! This person will be responsible for documenting memories that you’ll look back on for years to come, so it’s crucial to make the right choice. Setting up a call with your top candidates is a great way to narrow it down, but it helps to come prepared with a list of questions. Here’s a list of key questions to ask your wedding photographer to help guide your decision.

1. “How long have you been working in the wedding industry?”

Why it’s important: Knowing a photographer’s level of experience can be incredibly reassuring. Photographers who have shot weddings for years may know the nuances and unexpected challenges that come with the job, while newer photographers might bring fresh perspectives. If you have any hesitations, knowing a photographer’s experience level can help build trust. Either way, you’ll be better equipped to choose someone whose experience aligns with your comfort level.

2. “What’s your turnaround time for delivering the final gallery?”

Why it’s important: Turnaround time for wedding photos can vary from two weeks to several months. While this might not be a deal-breaker, it’s good to know what to expect from a photographer based on their editing process, workload, and other factors. Some photographers have a longer timeline to ensure the highest quality, so being flexible with their process is beneficial. But if there’s a specific timeframe you’d prefer, clarify this upfront.

3. “What types of shots do you gravitate toward on a wedding day?”

Why it’s important: Every photographer has a unique style. Some focus on capturing candid, organic moments, while others lean towards curated or posed shots. There’s no right or wrong answer here—it’s all about your personal preferences. This question helps ensure your photographer’s style aligns with your vision for your wedding gallery.

4. “Are your packages flexible if we decide to add extra coverage?”

Why it’s important: Weddings are full of last-minute changes, and you may want to add an extra hour or two of coverage as your big day approaches. This question helps gauge the photographer’s flexibility, giving you peace of mind that you can adapt if your timeline shifts.

5. “Can we see a full gallery from a recent wedding?”

Why it’s important: While a photographer’s social media and website will show the highlights of their work, a full gallery offers a complete look at their style. Even if you’ve scrolled through their entire Instagram feed, you’ve likely only seen their best moments. Asking to see a full gallery will give you a more realistic sense of the quality, consistency, and storytelling approach they bring to an entire wedding day. Do they capture the big picture while also highlighting the little details? This will help you decide if their work truly aligns with your vision.

6. “What is your backup process for securing our photos?”

Why it’s important: Many experienced photographers have safeguards to ensure your photos are secure, but it’s still a good question to ask—especially if the photographer is new to the industry. After a wedding, I immediately upload all photos onto my computer and an external hard drive, where they remain, including any photos I don’t plan to include in the final gallery. I also keep the photos on the memory cards until the final gallery is sent, just in case! Ideally, your photographer should have a similar process in place, with multiple backups to protect your photos from any unexpected technical issues.

7. “Do you offer payment plans?”

Why it’s important: Weddings can be costly, so knowing if your photographer offers payment plans can help with budgeting. Some photographers allow clients to spread payments over time, making it easier to invest in the photographer you truly want.

8. “Are there any additional fees not listed in the contract?”

Why it’s important: Transparency is key, and any additional fees—such as travel, parking, or overtime—should be stated upfront in the contract. This question ensures there won’t be any surprises after the wedding and lets you plan your budget more accurately.

9. “What’s your approach to handling unexpected challenges on the wedding day?”

Why it’s important: Weddings don’t always go exactly as planned, and it’s essential to know how your photographer handles unexpected challenges, like timeline changes or inclement weather. This question helps you understand their adaptability and problem-solving skills. Experienced photographers can often provide examples of times when they had to pivot quickly to ensure that every moment was still beautifully captured, no matter the circumstances.

10. “Do you work with a second shooter or assistant?”

Why it’s important: If you’re having a larger wedding or want a wider range of perspectives, a second shooter can be incredibly beneficial. A second shooter allows for more diverse angles, capturing simultaneous moments like the groom’s reaction during the first look or candid guest interactions while formal photos are being taken. Asking about this option can help you decide if additional coverage is the right fit for your wedding day.

11. “How do you communicate with clients leading up to the wedding?”

Why it’s important: Clear, proactive communication is crucial for a smooth experience. Ask how often you can expect updates or check-ins leading up to your wedding day, and when they plan to get in touch about final details like the timeline or specific shot requests. Understanding their communication style will give you peace of mind that everyone is on the same page, so you can focus on planning the wedding (and then enjoying it)!

Additional tip: check their Google reviews

While asking these questions can very helpful, seeing what past clients have said is also valuable. Check out a photographer’s Google reviews to understand their strengths and what they bring to the table.

Making the final decision

These questions will help you gauge the experience, flexibility, and professionalism of each photographer you speak with. But remember, it’s not just their answers that matter—it’s also their willingness to be open, patient, and thorough in addressing your questions. After your conversation, you should feel excited and confident in your choice, knowing they’re the perfect fit to document your wedding day.
