Planning your first look? Here’s how to choose the perfect location for stunning photos and a memorable moment.

Your wedding day is filled with special moments, but the first look is truly one of the most emotional and intimate. It’s a time to share a quiet, personal moment with your partner before the celebration begins. But to make the most of this meaningful time—and the beautiful photos that will come from it—you need to choose the right spot for your first look.

Choosing the perfect location might seem daunting, especially if you have a few great options to choose from, but don’t worry—I’m here to help! With over five years of experience as a wedding photographer in Niagara and Southern Ontario, I’ve helped many couples find the ideal spot for their first look. Here’s a guide to help you narrow down your options and create the perfect moment for you both—and the photos you’ll cherish for years to come.

1. Consider the time of day for your first look

The time of day you plan your first look plays a huge role in the feel of the moment and the outcome of the photos, and it’s not just about how it fits into your timeline. Lighting can change drastically depending on when you’re planning the moment, and the location can look very different in the morning compared to the afternoon.

If you're planning your first look at 10 a.m., visit the spots you’re considering around that same time of day to see how the light works in each location. Some venues, like parks or gardens, might be busy at certain times. Others, like gazebos or secluded spots, might be too shaded early on or surrounded by bugs. Checking the lighting and the overall environment will give you the best idea of how everything will look and feel during your big moment.

2. Think about the lighting

Building off the last point, lighting is the backbone of great photography, and when it comes to your first look, you want it to be just right. Even if you have the most breathtaking view, poor lighting can ruin your photos—and your first look moment.

For example, the vineyard that looked perfect during your venue visit at dusk may not be ideal during high noon. You don’t want your partner to be waiting in the blazing sun, and you definitely don’t want to be cast in shadow when you turn to face each other. To avoid any mishaps, be sure to visit your location at the same time you plan to do your first look to ensure the lighting will work in your favour.

3. Determine how private the spot is

Privacy is something many couples consider when choosing a location for their first look. Some couples love the idea of an intimate, secluded spot, while others are fine with a semi-private or even a more public location.

Think about how much privacy you want during this moment. Will your guests be able to sneak a peek as they arrive for the ceremony? Is the location tucked away enough that no one will accidentally catch a glimpse of you before the big reveal? Depending on your preference, you’ll want to pick a location that ensures your first look remains a surprise and a personal moment between you and your partner.

4. Is it Convenient to get to?

On your wedding day, convenience is key. What looks great during your venue tour may not be so easy to reach when you’re wearing heels, a wedding dress, or a full suit. Before finalizing your first look location, consider how accessible it will be on the day of your wedding.

Will it be easy to walk to, or will you need to trek across a large property, down a hill, or through rough terrain? Again, keep in mind that what’s comfortable on your venue walk-through may not be as practical when you're wearing formal attire. Choose a location that makes sense for the flow of your day, and one that won’t have you rushing or stressing to get there.

5. Ensure the spot actually makes sense for a first look

It’s tempting to choose the most picturesque spot, but sometimes the most beautiful places aren’t always the best choices for a first look. Some spots may be too crowded, too exposed, or have logistical challenges that make them less ideal for the intimate moment you want to create.

For example, a spot with too many people around might mean your partner sees you before you’re ready, or a location that’s too exposed could have you both standing in the hot sun with no shade. When in doubt, ask your photographer for advice! As someone who’s captured dozens of first looks, I can help you pick a spot that not only looks great but also makes sense for your moment.

6. Ask your photographer for help

As a wedding photographer, I’ve helped couples choose the perfect first look locations for years, and it’s one of my favorite parts of the process! Having worked in so many different venues across Niagara and Southern Ontario, I know which spots work best for beautiful, timeless photos. I also understand how lighting, privacy, and accessibility impact the overall feel of the moment—and the photos you’ll receive.

If you're feeling uncertain about where to do your first look, don’t hesitate to reach out to your photographer for guidance. We’ve seen it all and are happy to offer suggestions based on your preferences and your venue’s layout. Together, we can create a first look that feels seamless and looks stunning in your photos.

Conclusion: choosing the perfect spot for your first look

Your first look is one of the most anticipated moments of your wedding day. By choosing the right spot for it, you’re setting the stage for a beautiful, emotional experience—and creating a collection of photos you’ll cherish forever.

Take your time, consider the lighting, privacy, and accessibility, and most importantly, pick a spot that feels right for both of you. Whether you’re planning your first look in Niagara, Toronto, or anywhere across Southern Ontario, the right location will make your moment even more magical.
